A stunning antique 18k white gold filigree ring with a large tropical blue spinel center stone that looks like blue topaz. The stone is bezel set with a ring of seed pearls strung on gold wire around the outside edge. The setting is hand-crafted with an intricate filigree design. The stone is secure in the setting and shows only the tiniest amount of wear to the cutlet (which cannot be seen without magnification). There are no chips or other damage. The ring has been well-cared for and was likely worn sparingly as evidenced by the lack of wear to the design and stone.
This ring came to us with the pearl stringing wire broken. We just had it repaired with a sturdier wire than the original and new seed pearls as most of the original ones were missing. The rest of the ring is original.
We have been unable to determine if the stone is natural or lab-created. Chemically, natural and lab stones are identical. Lab spinel was created by accident in 1906 during an attempt to replicate sapphires. Most blue spinel available today is lab-created due to the rarity of natural gems.
