Round Brilliant

The most popular diamond shape is the round brilliant. Created by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919, it features a round shape in an upside down pyramid. Considered the ideal diamond cut for the exceptional brilliance it gives to the stone, it features an octagonal table with 16 facets on the crown, 32 facets on the girdle (upper and lower combined) and 8 facets on the pavilion.

The modern round brillant cut is essentially the same as Tolkowsy’s, but features a wider table and flater facets.

The round brilliant evolved from the earlier Old European cut.
