For diamonds, see, “Cut, Diamond.” Broadly speaking, cut is refers to two components of gemstones; the shape the stone is made into, and the type and number of cuts used to create facets. The cut of a stone can be simple – a cabochon, for example – or it can be highly detailed and ornate, such as the new “fantasy cut” stones on the market. The most common cuts are; round, oval, princess, emerald, marquise and heart.
